Have you ever tasted something that was so good you enjoyed every piece of it and savored the very last crumb? The last crumb from a delicious dessert can be quite satisfying.
Have you every been so hungry that you would give anything to have a few crumbs just to hold you over? When you’re starving the idea of having crumbs to savor seems so satisfying. But reality is crumbs can only hold you over, they are not enough to fill you.
Food is not the only thing we savor.
There are many people who are in a state of brokenness longing for the company of another. They struggle with emptiness and loneliness and would do anything to escape the feelings of abandonment or neglect.
When someone is neglected they crave every crumb of affection they can get. Just like a neglected puppy craves attention from anyone who will love him. Not only do we crave the crumbs but sometimes we feel like one. I recall a time when a relationship I treasured ended. I couldn’t understand what I did wrong and that unknown made me feel like I held no value to the person.
While some savor the last crumb of their meal others throw away their crumbs. Crumbs can be satisfying to one person yet worthless to another.
If you’re facing any type of rejection know that you are not worthless. It took me a little bit of time to realize that my value was not tied to the person that left me. If you are in this place or in a place of loneliness or longing, I pray that you will know that you are treasured and loved.
There is a story in the bible in Matthew 15:21-28 about a Canaanite Woman who went to Jesus seeking healing for her daughter. Jesus’s disciples told him to send the woman away but Jesus responded to them using a mini parable staying, “It is not right to take the children’s bread and toss it to the dogs.” The Canaanite Woman responded and said, “That’s true, Lord, but even dogs are allowed to eat the scraps that fall beneath their masters’ table”. Jesus responded, “Woman you have great faith! Your request is granted.” And her daughter was healed.
This story speaks strongly to me because it shows that the Canaanite Woman’s faith was so strong that she knew it was an honor to be at the feet of Jesus. He was moved by her faith because she understood that teaching his disciples (the children) took precedence over her. The woman did not take offense and clearly understood his mini-parable and knew just how honoring it would be to wait on Jesus and feed off of the crumbs, because just a few crumbs from Jesus’s table hold power.
I admire this strong faith that she had. It shows me that when we hold onto unwavering faith and choose whose crumbs we will chase after and crave, that is when our lives are capable of being transformed. That is when we will receive our blessings.
Are you in a place in life right now where you are longing for or craving the wrong things? Do you have an addiction to food, drugs, sex or attention. Do you accept crumbs to hold you over because you are starving inside? Are you accepting the crumbs hoping that you can make them into more? If so, I pray that you will open your heart up to know the love that feeds us and fills to the point of overflow rather than chasing crumbs.
We can’t build on crumbs and they will never fill us
Sometimes we think giving more and accepting little in return is what a good person does. But we must instead learn to live with expectancy for greater and value ourselves enough to know what we deserve.
Father,
I lift up myself and my readers to you today. Father search our hearts and show us just how deeply your love for us runs. Father if anyone is chasing after crumbs trying to satisfy a craving, longing or addiction please deliver them. Transform our minds Father God and reveal to all that our worth is found in you alone. Remind us Father that you did not create us to live on crumbs day-to-day just to make it. Father, mend broken hearts, heal wounds and break the chains of any addictions holding us back from experiencing fulfillment and joy that can only be found when you dwell within. Father we are needy people, bless us in every way filling every void that lies within. Help us to turn away from the things that hurt us and hurt you. Father, please forgive us for our mistakes, cleanse us, and reshape us so that we may live and long only for that which is good and sent by you. Father, deliver anyone having feelings of shame and reveal to them that you are a God of mercy and love.
In Jesus name,
Amen
Growing with you,
Sandy
